PROVINS
UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE

On the ancient lands of the Counts of Champagne, Provins has been, since the year 1000, at the crossroads of European trade. The city gradually became a commercial place of the first order in the 12th and 13th centuries, culminating in the famous Champagne Fairs. Eight centuries later, the whole city of Provins is the most authentic example of Medieval history in the 11th to 13th centuries. Its present architectural heritage illustrates a formative period of Western history, linked to the development of economic and cultural exchange in Europe. The city has 58 registered historical monuments, a true conservatory of civil, religious, and military architecture. Provins has been on the register of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since December of 2001.
